This Pride Month, the Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton University, in collaboration with Hammonton Pride, presents Under the Spotlight: Trans Identity, Drag Artistry, and the Politics of Now—a dynamic panel discussion featuring members of the Trans Equity Coalition alongside local changemakers and drag performers.

Featuring Venus Mystique, Miss Paradise 2025; Jo Miller, Woodbury Councilperson; Nathan Rodriguez, Executive Director of the Trans Equity Coalition; and Roxanne Laza, Dios Latina New Jersey 2025, this panel will explore the nuanced differences between being transgender and performing in drag—two distinct experiences that are often conflated in public discourse. Panelists will share their personal journeys, unpacking the complexities of gender identity and artistic expression while addressing the unique challenges each community faces.

In addition to clarifying these differences, the discussion will examine the broader political landscape impacting both trans people and drag performers. From legislative attacks on gender-affirming care to restrictions on drag performances, panelists will highlight how these policies affect real lives—and how communities can respond with resilience and advocacy.
