01.16.2024 $1 Million State Grant to Promote Arts and Culture in Atlantic City - Atlantic City, N.J. — The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) approved the Public Space Activation Grant in December under the Activation, Revitalization and Transformation (A.R.T.) program, awarding a $1 million state grant received by Stockton University. Through the grant, Stockton will work with four community development corporations in the city to implement a multistage project to promote at a higher level the arts and culture of Atlantic City and its diversity.

For 43 days between May and June 1968, demonstrators demanded social reforms while living side-by-side on the National Mall in a tent city known as Resurrection City.

3.1.20 Noyes Arts Garage, Atlantic City, N.J. - The Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton University at the Arts Garage in Atlantic City presents an exciting exhibition this spring, Treacy Ziegler, from April 3, 2020 through June 28, 2020 with an opening reception on Friday, April 10, 2020 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Artist Treacy Ziegler will be exhibiting with the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University this coming April. She will also be exhibiting at MoMA PS1’s exhibition on prison art “Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration” during at the same time. Ziegler’s work will connect her personal experience of corresponding through letters with incarcerated individuals, creating art with incarcerated artists, and non-incarcerated artists impacted by the US prison system. Treacy Ziegler’s portfolio of work covers painting, sculpture, printmaking, and drawing. She describes her use of drawing as “the primary basis for seeing” and her start to her work. Ziegler’s venture into sculpture began three years ago, where her bronze sculptures develop from rubber, clay, plaster, and wax before being cast in bronze. Her sculptures incorporate her experience as a teacher in prisons by using letters from prisoners on her work. Treacy Ziegler volunteers as a program director for the Prisoner Express, developing an art curriculum for 6,500 prisoners across the United States. Fran Bull’s exhibition “We're All At A Party Called Life on Earth” will celebrate art and community, yet encourage internal thought. Her work involves brightly colored sculptures, a grand entrance to enter the party, and her personal connection to Atlantic City. Bull strives for viewers to ask themselves the following questions: “How is it that we are not celebrating every moment- amazed at our diversity- in wonder that we find ourselves here, together on a planet whirling in space at some incredible speed, circling the sun, held fast by the mysterious forces?”, “What are the ways we can all contribute to making our lives a true celebration of life on planet Earth?”, and “If some of the sculptures, the pretend people in this should could speak... what would they say?”. She encourages viewers to respond to her work on the papers provided, whether it be a drawing, poem, or adding more questions. Fran Bull has always been fully invested her exploring her artistic voice, stemming from her childhood filled with art classes at the Newark Museum. She grew up in New Jersey but spent a majority of her life traveling to and from New York City. Bull’s extensive educational background includes a Voice Studies degree from Bennington College, a degree in Textile Design, and an M.A. in Art and Art Education from New York University. Bull’s work explores “fusing images and/or ideas from the ancient past with icons of modernity”. Her influences include her teachers, artists who are her friends and collaborators, pulling ideas from literature, and studying artists who inspire and challenge her. 11.14.19 Soraida Martinez is a painter, a graphic designer, and the creator of Verdadism. Martinez uses her personal connection to her Puerto Rican heritage as an influence for her artwork. Martinez created Verdadism in 1992. By fusing the Spanish word, verdad, which means truth, and the English suffix, “ism,” associated with visual theory, Martinez created the word Verdadism. Verdadism is a distinct, contemporary art form. It assimilates aspects of hard-edge abstract expressionism with philosophical teachings to juxtapose paintings with written social commentaries. The focus of Verdadism is to bring about social change by developing a comprehension and appreciation of all people, while also maintaining an appreciation for oneself. One does not simply view a work of Verdadism, but must engage in the message of the artist to gain an understanding and connection to humanity as a whole. Two main aspects that make up Verdadism are the visual element and the writtenelement. Each work done by Martinez includes a written piece regarding a social issue personally connected to her or reflections of American culture. Sexism and racism are two issues in particular that Martinez challenges in her works. According to Martinez, “Verdadism means to empower yourself with your own truth and to go for it.” Martinez served on the New Jersey State Council On The Arts from 1996 to 2000. In 2013, the Huffington Post named Martinez as one of the top ten Latin Artists in the United States. Martinez attended Rowan University, majoring in fine art and having a concentration on design. She graduated in 1981, and she also previously obtained a degree in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Psychology from Cumberland County College in 1978. This exhibit features works by local Latina feminist painter, Soraida Martinez, who is the creator of the Verdadism movement. The primary purpose behind the paintings of Verdadism is to precipitate social change, to promote an understanding of humanity and to teach tolerance and the self-empowerment of the individual.
